How to Pick a Trader - 5 Metrics Beyond ROI

Open the live leaderboard and the top name usually has the flashiest ROI. But high ROI does not mean worth copying.

What really decides your account's survival is drawdown and consistency. This article uses five dimensions to help you pick the right trader on dodobe's leaderboard.

1. Max Drawdown - more important than ROI

Max drawdown measures the largest loss from peak to trough. A trader with 200 percent ROI but 70 percent drawdown may leave you down 70 percent at the worst point, and most people cannot hold through that.

Beginners: prefer traders with historical max drawdown at or below 15 percent.

2. Sharpe Ratio - return per unit of risk

Sharpe equals excess return divided by volatility. Earning 50 percent with small swings (high Sharpe) is more comfortable and more sustainable than the same gain with violent swings (low Sharpe).

3. Win Rate - not the higher the better

A 90 percent win rate that loses it all in one trade (small wins, big loss) still blows up. Check the profit and loss ratio, average win divided by average loss should be clearly above 1.

4. Consistency - read the curve, not the screenshot

5. Assets Under Management (AUM) - more followers, steadier?

High follower count and AUM mean the market put real money behind them. But watch for a capacity ceiling, check whether recent returns slipped as scale grew.

A practical filtering flow

  1. On the live leaderboard, sort by drawdown ascending and shortlist those at or below 15 percent.
  2. Among them, sort by Sharpe descending and take the top 10.
  3. Manually verify win rate, profit and loss ratio, and live duration.
  4. Pick 3 to 5 with complementary styles and copy them together.

Manage after you copy

Picking is only the start. Set an overall stop-loss, review periodically, and pair with AI strategies from the strategy market for hedging. Tiers and fees are on the pricing page.
